Job Hunting for International Students 101 Part 2 – Writing your resume

Hello, welcome to the Job Hunting for International Students Series. I will give some tips on how you as a 4 year-degree seeker can secure a job after college.

Part 2: Writing your resume

  1. Go to your school’s Career and Professional Development site, or do a google search and download the cover letter/resume guide, and create a resume in a similar fashion. (Kalamazoo College has drop in hours Monday-Thurs from 2 to 4:30  for resume help, take advantage!)
  2. Using the examples in the book, as well as your list of activities/jobs/honours, make a draft resume.
  3. Carry your resume to drop in hour or to your career counsellor for error checking, you can do this as many times as you want until its perfect.

General tips for resume writing:

  • – If you run out of space, increase the page margins
  • – Keep your resume one page only
  • – Don’t include a picture, religion, gender, hobbies
  • – Include a skills section and a relevant courses section
  • – Objective is not necessary but you can include it if you are so inclined.
  • – use active words for you job/activity descriptions
  • – Include your GPA if it’s above 3.0
  • – Now would be a good time to work on your LinkedIn page so you can include it on your resume.
  • – If you studied abroad, put it on there too. Even more international experience apart from coming to America is always good to show, even if it’s just for school.

Now you can search for jobs via K Connect, indeed.com, linkedIn, google searches for places that are hiring and submit your resume! Now, our biggest issue is finding a company that sponsors HB1 visa (work visas for international students). To do this, check out https://reason.kzoo.edu/ccd/resources/ and see USC’s resources for international students, K’s resources for international students and www.myvisajobs.com to look and apply for companies who sponsor international students.

Stay tuned next week for part 3.
