Part 5: Interview Prep

Hurrah, you’ve gotten a call back for an interview, via phone, most likely. Phone interviews can either be easy, because if you are nervous, it’s harder to tell, or harder, because you can’t tell what the other person is thinking.

For a phone/skype interview

First, you will want to get a  suit ready, just so you get in the mode of being professional (for skype interview, of course you need a suit). Lastly, find/reserve a quiet room (preferably with a white background for skype)

  1. Schedule a mock interview with your counsellor. So some thorough research on the company you are applying for.
  2. See https://reason.kzoo.edu/ccd/resources/ for interviewing tips
  3. Search google for behavioural questions and practice your answers for them. Write them down in a google doc.
  4. Depending on what the recruiter told you, you might want to do the same for a tech interview – search for sample tech interview questions and study what you know.
  5. Try to limit your filler words (uh, uhm, ah) as much as possible. It doesn’t sound good over the phone.
  6. Keep your answers concise and conversational!
  7. Its best you don’t say words such as ‘I think’ or ‘I guess’. It makes you sound unsure of yourself.
  8. Generate at least 3 questions to ask them! Remember, you are interviewing them as well, so you should ALWAYS have questions to ask.

Lastly, this only gets better with practice. Practice with a friend and develop your confidence over the phone, because the words you say here, and the way you say them are key, because that’s all the interviewer has to work with. An exceptional idea would be to interview a friend, so you can have an idea of what it would be like if you were the interviewer.
